ROTA DO FRESCO
First Cultural Touring Route in our country, created in 1998, the Fresco Route brings together 15 Alentejo municipalities: Alvito, Cuba, Vidigueira, Viana do Alentejo, Portel, Évora, Montemor-o-Novo, Borba, Vila Viçosa, Alandroal, Serpa , Moura, Castro Verde, Aljustrel and Beja.
The Fresco Route proposes the discovery of the Alentejo's hidden treasure — the Fresco Mural Painting — which is kept, for very specific reasons and directly related to the development of this territory — in most of the region's churches, chapels and hermitages. The Fresco Route is thus a unique opportunity to cross these doors, usually closed, and unveil paintings with 500 years of existence, preserved, sometimes without blemish, in forgotten monuments.
The Routes have a varied duration (from 1/2 day to 4 days) and are intended for small and medium groups. You can also venture into a Fresco Mural Painting Atelier or a seasonal Whitewashing Atelier. All Routes are accompanied by a Heritage Interpreter, graduated in History or History of Art and specially trained in mural painting and Alentejo culture. Routes may also take place on a self-guided basis.
